Hp Tuners L5P Pickup Unlocked Ecm Install Instructions
This article will walk you through installing your L5P tuning package
Thank you for purchasing our Duramaxtuner L5P/L5D Duramax Tuning Package. Please pull
your vehicle into a safe location before proceeding, preferably in your garage or somewhere out
of the way. The entire process may take a couple of hours. YOU WILL NEED INTERNET
ACCESS FOR THE ENTIRE PROCESS.
BEFORE REMOVING YOUR FACTORY ECM
1. Download & Install .Net Windows Runtime 6:
2. Download & Install the latest VCM Suite Beta:
3. Open up VCM Scanner and connect your MPVI2 to the truck with the ignition on.
(17-19 trucks turn the key two clicks forward. For the 20+ trucks push and hold the start button for 8 seconds without your foot on brake to cycle the ignition on)
Perform the “Replace ECM” special function in VCM Scanner.
(A) Open VCM Scanner on your computer. Plug your MPVI2 into your laptop first & then connect your MPVI2 to the vehicle’s OBD2 port with the stock ecm installed.
Turn the key to the Run position, two clicks forward(key on, engine off) For push button start vehicles, hold the button down for 7-8s
(B)Select the Vehicle Icon that says “Connect to Vehicle” on the top items bar.
1.Go to “Vehicle Controls & Special Functions”
2.Select the Systems Tab
3.Click “Replace ECM” To start the function
4.It will again ask you if the stock ecm is installed. Click Yes.
5.ECM Data Read Successfully. Click Okay.
You may now replace the stock ECM with your provided unlocked ECM.
For 2017-2019 models the Factory ECM is located behind the driver’s side headlight, in between the battery and the power steering pump. It is fastened with 1 christmas tree clips or 2 10MM bolts. It is easiest to remove the 2 most forward
connectors before trying to pull out your ecm, and leaving the 3rd one connected until it is free and brought up where you can see it above the radiator hose. The connectors
themselves have a lock that needs to be slid forward, pushed down, and at that point you can lift up the locking lever which will also push away from the ecm. The “Tcm” is the same style connector and is mounted on the the Firewall for 2017 Trucks or on the fan shroud for 2018-2019 Trucks.
For 2020+ Models the ECM is located in the driver side wheel well. The easiest way to access this is by jacking up the front, driver's side of the truck just enough, where the suspension extends but does not lift the wheel off the ground. Remove the factory fender liner (you can leave the fender flare attached)
(C) Open VCM Scanner on your computer. Plug your MPVI2 into your laptop & then connect your MPVI2 to the vehicle’s OBD2 port with the Unlocked ecm installed.
Select the Vehicle Icon that says “Connect to Vehicle”
1.Go to “Vehicle Controls & Special Functions”
2.Change Vin. Insert your vehicle's vin number. “Okay”
If you see your vehicle's VIN at the top of the window you can skip this step.
3.Go to “Vehicle Controls & Special Functions”
4. Select the “Systems” Tab
5. Click “Replace ECM” To start the function.
6. It will again ask you if the stock ecm is installed. This time select “NO”. → Have
you installed the new/replacement ecm? → YES.
7. The ECM Replacement Is Now Complete
8. If you have an Unlocked TCM and have not already installed it now is a good time to
do so. There is no commanded swap process, so find the TCM located near the ECM on the
Fan shroud and swap in your unlocked TCM.
This TCM has no data so will require a driving relearn process. Do not tow or drive the vehicle erratically before doing this. TCM relearn process is found on the last step of these instructions. In Order to flash your tcm with your ECM or just tcm alone, follow the steps below. Make sure you select write calibration on both the ecm & tcm or just the tcm if you desire.
9. If you have one of our preloaded ECM’s you may now start the vehicle. We pre-program your ECM with the VATS OFF. However you will still need to do the crank relearn at some point. The vehicle must be up to temperature before doing this. In order to do a VATS on flash you will need a GM Tool.
If you have a Unlocked ECM/TCM with no tunes, or are just looking to change your tunes follow these steps.
(A) Open up VCM Editor & Connect your MPVI2 to the computer first and then to the
vehicle's OBD2 port. Validate your MPVI2 by resyncing it. Do this in the help tab →
Resync Interface. KEY THE TRUCK ON, RUN POSITION, DO NOT START.
(B) In VCM editor open up the custom tune that you would like to flash, Or if you need to read
your stock file continue to (C) below.
- The tunes provided by us should either be in your email or on a flash drive that
came with your cable. Download these tunes onto your desktop & select open in
(C) Reading & Writing. To read your ECM make sure no other files are open in hptuners and
you should be able to select the green read arrow in the top center.
- Select the MODULES you would like to read.
Save this file to your desktop and email it to the tuner.
For customers sending in a stock file we will also need a DOT INFO log. To get this log; key on the truck--> with vcm scanner or editior open, select the White "I" with a blue circle around it. It will open a smaller screen, hit the white I again. Once the data is populated, please save that document with your name and vin number.
***** EMAIL Stockfile@duramaxtuner.com with your name, order number, stock file, and info log.*********
(D) To load a tune onto your L5P start by opening up the Vcm editor program and hit the open button in the top left corner.
1. Search out the tune file you would like to load and open it
2. With the tune file open hit the red arrow at the top to open the write feature
3. If this is your first time flashing you will need to choose specific under licensing and hit yes to proceed, skip to step 4 if this is not the first time loading the tune. (The ecm takes 8 credits and the tcm takes 4)
4. With the writing box up choose write entire and hit the write button
5. When doing a full flash it will take around 8 min and a cal flash will take around a minute
6. As soon as it says write completed then you are good to go, cycle the ignition and you are finished writing the tune
E. Crank Relearn- The crank relearn doesn't have to be done immediately but should be done
whenever you have a chance. Get the truck up to vehicle operating temp and park it in a safe
(1)Open up VCM Scanner , Connect MPVI2 to your laptop and then to the vehicle.
(2)Make Sure your vehicle is in park with the parking brake set.
(3)Connect vehicle (select the appropriate car icon in the top window)
(4)Select Vehicle→ Controls and Special Functions → Engine Tab- Crank Relearn
(5)When prompted, gradually rev the engine up to fuel cut and release the gas pedal.
(6)This should complete the crank relearn process.
TCM Relearn Process- After you have installed your ECM & TCM and determined the vehicle is operational you will need to do a TCM Relearn. The entire learning process will take a few hundred miles, however you need to do a basic driving learn first. Do not tow or drive the truck hard until this initial process is complete. Find a safe location where you can get your vehicle up to 60-65 mph and back to a stop. First run through all the gears from 1st to 6th gear at ¼ throttle. Then let the truck downshift through all gears as you slow down and come to a stop. Now run the truck from 1st to 6th gear at ½ throttle , again let it downshift through all the gears and come to a stop. Do the same process with ¾ throttle & wide open throttle.
You have now completed a basic trans relearn and are okay to drive. You may do this process multiple times if you feel the shifting is still too erratic for normal driving. A complete learn will usually take anywhere from 100 to 300 miles of different driving styles.
